A Nigerian national, identified as Balogun Ridwan, has been captured while reportedly fighting for Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

According to a report from a Ukrainian news outlet, UnitedMedia24, Ridwan was allegedly lured into the conflict under false pretenses of receiving an engineering job and was subsequently arrested by Ukrainian forces.

The report states that Ridwan was tricked into traveling to Russia, where he was coerced into signing a contract with the Russian military upon his arrival, which he did not fully comprehend as it was in Russian.

He recounted to the newspaper that during the signing of the contract, they were prohibited from using their phones to assist in translation, leading to confusion about what they were committing to. Ridwan noted he expected to be employed in a technical role but found himself thrust into the military.

He received a few weeks of chaotic training before being deployed to a combat zone. Ridwan reported harsh conditions, with accounts of other recruits, such as a fellow African named Bubaka, who suffered a heart attack during training but was still sent to the front lines.

At the time of his arrest, Ridwan had reportedly surrendered to Ukrainian forces during a raid in January, and his previous absence was misreported as being killed in action.

Various Nigerian media outlets mentioned Ridwan alongside other Nigerians who had allegedly lost their lives while fighting under similar circumstances, specifically under the deception of securing “security jobs.”

Details on when Ridwan arrived in Russia were not specified, nor was the date of his deployment made clear by the report. Nonetheless, he has expressed a wish to return to Nigeria.

Addressing the situation, Ridwan has appealed for the Nigerian government’s assistance, claiming he was “deceived” and emphasizing that he did not knowingly join the Russian military.

“I went to Russia on a tourist visa seeking work. Russia misled me, converted me into a soldier, and sent me to Ukraine,” he stated, appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for forgiveness as he seeks to return home.

This incident highlights the increasing concerns surrounding Nigerians who have been drawn into fighting for Russia after being misled about job opportunities.

Recent intelligence reports have revealed the deaths of two other Nigerians, Hamzat Kolawole and Mbah Udoka, in the ongoing war.

Multiple investigations have found that promising job offers often turn into military enlistment for many individuals, raising significant alarm regarding the recruitment practices taking place.

Nigerian officials have expressed serious concerns over the rise of their citizens being illegally recruited into foreign conflicts, with reports indicating that recruits are often made to sign documents in languages they do not understand, and their travel documents are confiscated upon arrival.
