The National President of the Nigerian Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN), Aliyu Isa Maitasamu, has voiced serious concerns regarding the alleged mistreatment of Nigerian traders in Ghana. This statement comes in the wake of the confiscation of trucks carrying onions and the subsequent decision by NOPPMAN to suspend all exports to the West African neighbour.

Maitasamu informed journalists on Sunday that Nigerian traders operating at the Kotoku Market in Accra, Ghana's capital, have frequently experienced intimidation and interference from local trade groups, which has negatively impacted their businesses.

He elaborated that the situation recently worsened after a disagreement between Nigerian and Ghanaian traders led to the impounding of several trucks laden with onions belonging to Nigerian merchants.

The NOPPMAN president characterized this action as a breach of established trade protocols, noting that the incident created considerable tension and resulted in substantial financial losses for the affected traders.

Consequently, the association has decided to immediately cease the export of onions from Nigeria to Ghana.

"This decision to suspend exports has become essential to shield our members from ongoing harassment and to prevent further economic damage," Maitasamu stated.

He emphasized that the suspension would remain in place until a secure, equitable, and lawful trading atmosphere is assured for Nigerian traders operating in Ghana.

Furthermore, the leadership of NOPPMAN has urged governmental bodies in both Nigeria and Ghana, along with relevant regional organizations, to investigate the incident thoroughly. They are also calling for assurances of traders' safety and the promotion of dialogue between the involved parties.

Maitasamu, however, refuted claims that armed individuals were involved in intercepting the onion-laden trucks, describing such reports as inaccurate and contrary to the actual events.

He reiterated NOPPMAN's dedication to fair trade practices and regional cooperation, expressing hope that prompt intervention would facilitate a resolution and pave the way for the resumption of cross-border onion commerce.
