A Nigerian woman named Joy Ogidinta has shared her story about her marriage, which ended in divorce a mere six months after she changed her surname to her husband's. Initially, Joy retained her maiden name after their wedding.
Following the birth of their son, who tragically passed away, she felt prompted to take her husband’s last name. In a Facebook post dated Thursday, March 6, she expressed her decision, stating, "When I got married, I didn’t change my surname to my husband’s according to tradition. After I had my son; even though he passed, I felt it was the right time to finally take my husband’s surname."
Joy recounted that shortly after she made the change, her marriage dissolved. "Guess what? That same year, we got divorced. That surname lasted barely six months," she lamented.
She also mentioned the bureaucratic process involved in changing her name, saying, "After I went through the newspaper publication and affidavit to switch my name from Ogidinta to his, I then had to undergo another name change to revert back to Ogidinta."
Joy concluded her reflection with a poignant thought: "The struggles women endure are immense. Now I find myself wondering if, when I remarry, I will have to go through the affidavit process again. Life can be quite amusing at times."
