Nigerian Woman Shares Harrowing Experience with Chinese Landlord Over Racial Discrimination

A Nigerian woman, Nwokoye Lynda, has detailed a shocking incident regarding her Chinese landlord, who ordered her and fellow tenants to leave his apartment without prior notice, citing a dislike for black individuals.

In a Facebook post made two days ago, Nwokoye described her experience as both frightening and unfair, expressing feelings of humiliation during the confrontation.

She revealed that the landlord refused to return their security deposit amounting to 7,000 RMB and called the authorities on them. At the police station, they pleaded for additional time, leading the landlord to reluctantly allow them to remain in the apartment for one more night, with a promise they would vacate by noon the following day.

Additionally, Nwokoye mentioned that they were barred from accessing the swimming pool in another residential complex where they had lived. Every request to use the facility was met with dismissive remarks and laughter.

In her post, she recounted, "I still can’t forget this. One evening in China, our landlord just comes and says he doesn’t want a black person staying in his apartment. Then he calls the police and insists we leave that same night."

She explained the process of renting in China, noting that tenants must sign an agreement and pay upfront, including two months’ rent as a deposit. This meant that their landlord was withholding their deposit of nearly 7,000 RMB, and the police were unhelpful.

"We spent hours sitting at the police station until 3 a.m., trying to find a solution. We were begging, explaining, and doing everything possible. At last, he said we could stay for just that night but would have to pay a fee. Initially, it was set at 400 RMB, but we negotiated it down to 250 RMB.

It was honestly a terrifying, unfair, and humiliating situation, but we managed to survive it. To date, our house deposit remains unreturned, even after police assurances of assistance. Reflecting on this incident today fills me with renewed anger!"
