The Nigerian women's wheelchair basketball team has etched its name in history by qualifying for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland.

In a thrilling final on March 26, the team emerged victorious against South Africa with a score of 8–3 during the Commonwealth Games qualifiers held in Angola.

Under the leadership of captain Ijigbamigbe Gbemisola Olubisi, the Nigerian squad staged an impressive comeback to claim the only available ticket to Glasgow, surpassing the expectations of many as South Africa were considered the tournament favorites.

Nigeria had previously faced defeat against South Africa in the group stages with a score of 7–3, but demonstrated remarkable grit and determination to secure their qualification.

Seyi Johnson, the President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, hailed this accomplishment as a monumental milestone that will greatly enhance the development of wheelchair basketball in Nigeria.

“As President, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment to have achieved this historic moment in Nigerian wheelchair basketball. Credit goes to everyone involved in the sport, both past and present, whose dedication and hard work have contributed to this success,” Johnson stated.

He also acknowledged the key role played by the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) in the team’s triumph.

“I want to express my gratitude to the leadership of the National Sports Commission under Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade for the support and guidance that has allowed all sports, regardless of their scale, to flourish in Nigeria,” he added.

On a less favorable note, the Nigerian men’s wheelchair basketball team narrowly fell short of qualification, losing to South Africa with a score of 13–8 in their final match.

Both Nigeria and South Africa will officially represent Africa at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, competing in the Women’s and Men’s Wheelchair Basketball events, respectively.
