A technical team from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently conducted an inspection of the Eba oil well located in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, signaling progress toward the commencement of commercial drilling activities in the state.

This inspection occurred after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu authorized commercial exploration, serving as part of the Federal Government's initiative to establish the necessary technical capabilities and infrastructure for oil production. The NNPCL officials undertook the inspection alongside representatives from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and various national security agencies to assess the site and validate its readiness for drilling operations.

The delegation was headed by Hussein Aliyu, who serves as the Project Coordinator for Enserv and leads the NNPCL Enserv technical team. Other team members included Wasiu Adeniyi, Onwugba Kelechi, Rabiu M. Audu, Ojonoka Braimah, Ahmad Usman, Akinbosola Oluwaseyi, Salisu Nuhu, James Amezhinim, Yusuf Abdul-Azeez, Amararu Isukul, and Livinus J. Kigbu.

Governor Dapo Abiodun described this development as a historic milestone for Ogun State, emphasizing that the initiation of drilling at Eba is expected to spur economic growth, generate job opportunities, and enhance federal attention to the coastal communities of the state.

Previous geological assessments have indicated the existence of hydrocarbons in the Ogun Waterside area, prompting initial surveys and engagements by NNPCL. In addition, the Ogun State Government independently confirmed the coordinates of the oil well, establishing that it lies within state boundaries.

To ensure the project's security, naval personnel have been stationed at the site for over a year and a half, supported by the Ogun State Government to safeguard the facility and surrounding area.

The Eba oil well is viewed as a strategic part of Nigeria's efforts to broaden oil production opportunities outside the Niger Delta. Stakeholders noted that subsequent phases will concentrate on ensuring regulatory adherence, maintaining community relationships, protecting the environment, and facilitating the smooth launch of commercial activities.

The Ogun State Government has also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his backing of the development of new oil basins and promoting a fair distribution of the country’s energy resources.
