The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has issued a stark warning about the worsening security situation and unfolding humanitarian crises across the northern parts of Nigeria. The group highlighted that acts of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping are increasingly prevalent, contributing to the displacement of communities.
During the 79th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the forum held in Kaduna, ACF Chairman Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN) stated that the region has encountered severe difficulties since the forum's previous gathering in August 2025. He specifically pointed to the rise in terrorism, armed banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping, noting incidents in states such as Kwara, Southern Kaduna, Katsina, and Benue.
Osuman described the impact of these security breaches as devastating, leading to the violent uprooting and displacement of families and entire communities. The resulting overcrowding in camps and informal settlements, coupled with limited access to essential services, has significantly increased the risks of malnutrition and mortality among those affected.
Furthermore, the ACF chairman highlighted that persistent attacks and the pervasive climate of fear have disrupted educational activities, leading to the closure of schools in affected areas. He also noted that rural economies have been severely impacted by the ongoing insecurity.
The ACF chairman urged the forum's state chapters to adopt a proactive stance, emphasizing that the organization's purpose should extend beyond mere ceremonial or rhetorical functions. He stressed the need for the ACF to be principled, sincere, sacrificial, and driven by concrete actions.
Osuman added that the forum must actively engage in constructive dialogue with both national and subnational government bodies to foster peace, stability, and support the civil rehabilitation of the populace.
