The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is reaching a critical juncture, with the relegation battle increasingly capturing attention alongside the league title race. Matchday 34 underscored the high stakes at the lower end of the table, as teams fighting to remain in the top flight secured vital results.
In Yenagoa, Wikki Tourists achieved a significant away victory by defeating Bayelsa United 1-0. Imamu Bala's second-half goal proved to be the decider, earning Wikki a crucial three points and pushing Bayelsa United deeper into the relegation zone.
Kun Khalifat, another club battling to avoid the drop, also delivered a strong performance. They secured a confident 3-0 win over Warri Wolves, with Mmesoma Nnorom scoring early and Uchechukwu Onuaha adding two late goals to seal an important win.
In Kano, Barau FC continued their quest for a respectable league finish by triumphing 2-1 against Remo Stars. After conceding the first goal, Barau staged a comeback with contributions from Joseph Atule and Joseph Kemim.
For Remo Stars, this defeat represents another setback in what has been a challenging season.
In Ibadan, Kwara United played out a goalless draw against Shooting Stars. While not an exciting encounter, the point gained could be invaluable for the Afonja Warriors in their fight for survival.
Meanwhile, in Lagos, Ikorodu City made a strong comeback with a decisive 3-0 victory over Kano Pillars. Joseph Arumala, Tosin Oyedokun, and Abayomi Ayodeji all found the back of the net in a dominant performance.
Enyimba FC also secured a comfortable 3-0 win, defeating Katsina United and widening the gap between themselves and the relegation zone.
At the summit of the league standings, Rivers United maintained their lead with a narrow 1-0 win over Plateau United, thanks to an early goal from Wisdom Samuel.
In other matches, Niger Tornadoes were held to a draw by Enugu Rangers, while Bendel Insurance secured a 1-0 victory against Abia Warriors.
Following the weekend's fixtures, Rivers United FC remain at the top of the table with 58 points from 34 games, though their lead is closely contested. Rangers International FC are two points behind with 56 points, and Ikorodu City FC are third with 55 points.
The narrow points difference between the top three indicates that any misstep could be costly, with Abia Warriors FC (52 points) and Shooting Stars Sports Club (51 points) also within striking distance.
The relegation battle is even tighter, with just a single point separating teams from safety. Kun Khalifat FC are currently at the bottom with 39 points, but several teams are clustered just above them. Remo Stars, Wikki Tourist FC, and Bayelsa United FC are all level on 40 points, as is Kwara United FC, who are just outside the drop zone.
With goal difference likely to play a significant role, every goal and point in the remaining fixtures will be crucial in determining which teams are relegated.
As only a few matches remain, the pressure is mounting across the league. While the race for the championship remains a key focus, the fight to avoid relegation has emerged as the most compelling narrative.
