The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed strong condemnation regarding the attack on a journalist from Albarka Radio in Bununu, located in the Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, which occurred during the Sallah festivities.
In a statement issued by the Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, the Union characterized the incident as a blatant violation of human rights and an affront to press freedom.
"This act of violence represents a significant breach of human rights, a direct attack on press freedom, and an embarrassing indication of lawlessness from officers who are meant to safeguard the populace rather than harm them," the statement read.
Gadau emphasized that the timing of the incident is particularly concerning, occurring amidst the NUJ's ongoing efforts to promote professionalism and accountability within security forces.
The Union has urged the Commissioner of Police for Bauchi State, CP Sani- Omolori Aliyu, to initiate an urgent inquiry and impose appropriate disciplinary measures on all officers implicated in this occurrence.
Additionally, the NUJ insists that the Police Command should assume responsibility for all medical costs incurred by the assaulted journalist, warning that failure to address these requests could compel the Union to convene an emergency congress to decide subsequent actions.
The Council has called on media organizations in the region to remain vigilant and adhere to future directives, ensuring that the security and dignity of journalists are upheld.
The NUJ reaffirmed its stance against any form of intimidation, harassment, or violence directed at journalists, insisting that such actions will not be tolerated under any condition.
