Officials from the Edo State Government have shut down an event centre located in the state, following an occurrence where prominent Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem voiced strong criticisms against President Bola Tinubu's government during a performance.

The venue in question is known as Mega Hub. The incident occurred during a party held on April 3rd, which was themed ‘Mega Rave: A night with the legends.’

During his appearance, Mr. Abdulkareem reportedly paused his performance to address the audience, directing criticism towards President Tinubu's administration. A video clip circulating on social media captured parts of his address, where he appeared to mock the president and question the effectiveness of security measures, referencing a recent incident in Plateau State.

In the video, the rapper also spoke about the economic hardships in Nigeria, attributing them to the current administration.

Several days after the event, specifically on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, government officials reportedly sealed off Mega Hub. Visual evidence from a video clip shared on an X handle on Wednesday showed the entrance to the venue cordoned off with red tape. An inscription on the wall indicated that the Edo State Government had sealed the premises on that date.

The sealing of the event centre has drawn attention, especially given that the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the same party as President Tinubu. Governor Okpebholo has previously expressed strong support for President Tinubu's administration.

When contacted, the Commissioner for Information in Edo State, Kassim Afegbua, initially stated he was unaware of the event centre being sealed. However, upon further inquiry, he confirmed the government's action, attributing it to 'security intelligence' rather than Mr. Abdulkareem's critical remarks about President Tinubu. Mr. Afegbua subsequently claimed that the event centre had already been unsealed, but did not provide a specific timeline for when this occurred, advising the reporter to verify independently.

Further details regarding the specific security intelligence that led to the sealing of the venue were not disclosed by the commissioner.
