DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the public relations officer of the Ogun State police, has issued a stern warning to Nigerians regarding the consequences of disseminating false information to law enforcement agencies or any public authority.
In a recent communication on X, he emphasized that under Nigerian law, providing inaccurate information is deemed a criminal act.
According to him, the Criminal Code Act stipulates that individuals who intentionally mislead public officers by giving false details can face imprisonment, fines, or both.
Additionally, he pointed out that the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015 entails legal repercussions for those who deliberately spread false information electronically, particularly on social media platforms.
Presently, the Ogun State police are investigating a case involving a woman named Mirabel, who falsely alleged that she was raped by an unidentified individual.
