A woman who had just come back from the United Kingdom to participate in a wedding in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has died in a road accident that took place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the incident transpired on Monday night near the Christopher University area along the expressway.

Akinbiyi indicated that the woman was traveling in a white Toyota Camry along with two other passengers when the vehicle collided with a truck.

He stated that the force of the impact resulted in her death, while the two other passengers—a male and a female—suffered injuries.

He remarked, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at the Christopher University section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at approximately 17:48 hours on March 23.”

“Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the Camry was speeding and crashed into a moving truck.”

“Three individuals were involved in this incident, including a male and two females. One female was killed, whereas the other two were injured.”

Akinbiyi added that initial reports suggested that the two female passengers had just returned from the UK and were en route to Abeokuta for a wedding ceremony at the time of their accident.

“Investigations revealed that the casualties were traveling from Lagos to Abeokuta, Ogun State, after arriving from the United Kingdom to attend the wedding.”

The injured individuals were promptly transported to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, while the deceased has been taken to the morgue at Redeemed Hospital.

In a separate traffic incident, four people were killed in a crash on the Ijebu-Imushin section of the Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway.

This accident, which also occurred on Monday night, involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with the registration number BDJ482XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck marked RSH969XC.

Reports indicated that the truck was being towed when the towing chain snapped, and the rapidly approaching Toyota bus subsequently collided with it.

After the incident, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, abandoning the truck.

Odunsi Afolabi, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for Ogun State, confirmed the occurrence on Tuesday. Afolabi attributed the crash primarily to the speeding of the bus driver, stating that the deceased were confirmed dead at the site of the accident.

He remarked, “Regrettably, all four individuals, which include two male adults and two female adults, sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene.”

“Initial investigations indicate that the crash was due to Speed Violations (SPV). The FRSC rescue team arrived at the location within eight minutes of being notified.”

The remains of the deceased were transported to the State Hospital Mortuary in Ijebu Ode, while the Nigerian Police Force, Imushin Division, has taken over the vehicles and is handling the ongoing investigation.

In response to the incidents, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, urged drivers to strictly adhere to speed limits, particularly during night travel, and to ensure that towing equipment is compliant with safety standards to avoid further preventable accidents.
