Ogun State is commemorating its 50th anniversary, a significant milestone that highlights its ongoing role as a keystone in Nigeria's advancement.
As the anniversary celebrates the achievements of the people of Ogun State, it also underscores the region's standing as a premier industrial hub in the country. Although Lagos is recognized as the country's primary economic center—leading sectors such as finance, technology, entertainment, and manufacturing—Ogun has carved out a unique identity characterized by its substantial manufacturing initiatives, including large estates like Agbara Industrial Estate and key industrial corridors along the Sagamu and Lagos- Ibadan Expressway, which draw international corporations and leverage its proximity to Lagos.
In light of Nigeria's diminishing status on the global stage due to economic and security challenges, international visitors might be keen to meet two influential personalities residing in Ogun—both globally acclaimed yet not necessarily friends. They share their roots in this historic state, creating a narrative that highlights Ogun's significance.
The state capital, Abeokuta, is notably the residence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s longest-serving leader, and Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka. Both figures inhabit expansive estates within the city, making it a potential draw for tourists interested in exploring their rich legacies.
Obasanjo is associated with the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, a unique facility in Africa dedicated to commemorating his life, while Soyinka's estate features a museum and art gallery showcasing his artistic contributions.
The shared heritage of these two distinguished sons of Ogun symbolizes the state’s importance as it marks its 50th creation anniversary. Reflecting on my contributions over the last decade, I find ample grounds to rejoice in this achievement. The date of the state’s golden jubilee falls on February 3, further signifying the gaiety surrounding this landmark.
The creation of Ogun State was born from the union of Ijebu and Egba provinces, which were established from the Western State. This restructuring took place during the Murtala-Obasanjo regime on February 3, 1976. As Nigeria transitioned from a structure of 19 states to the current configuration of 36 states, Ogun remains one of the original two states that have not experienced territorial adjustments since its inception, alongside Lagos.
In a reflection of the past, I recall the excitement in Abeokuta during the announcement of the state’s birth when I was a primary school student anticipating my 10th birthday. At that time, Ogun was still a traditional and rustic society.
Over the years, however, Ogun has transformed into a leading state. It has emerged as the most industrialized in Nigeria, with a significant contribution to the nation’s manufacturing sector alongside Lagos. Reports indicate that both states together produce over half of Nigeria's industrial output, positioning Ogun as an essential player providing critical infrastructure for large-scale manufacturing.
Ogun State functions similarly within Nigeria’s political geography as New Jersey does to New York, presenting a favorable environment for living and working. This status reflects several successes achieved over the last five decades, highlighting the need for continued infrastructure investments in manufacturing hubs such as Agbara, Ota, Sagamu, Mowe, and the Ibafo region.
Moreover, Ogun claims the title of Nigeria's education capital, hosting the largest number of higher learning institutions nationwide, with around 50 universities and colleges combined. This educational infrastructure mirrors that of renowned global educational hubs like Cambridge and Massachusetts, rooted in the state’s early interactions with modern civilization.
The capital was also where Nigeria’s first modern governmental system was established with the Egba United Government (EUG) in 1893, which gained formal recognition from British authorities in 1898. Highlights from this period include the establishment of clean water supply systems, and Abeokuta also bore witness to Nigeria’s first newspaper, published by Reverend Henry Townsend in 1859, titled "Iwe Iroyin fun Awon Ara Egba ati Yoruba."
Many cultural and political innovators have emerged from Ogun, including influential figures like Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Presently, the state continues to produce notable talents in sports and entertainment, such as global icons Wizkid and Anthony Joshua, alongside economic leaders like Otunba Mike Adenuga.
In the 26 years of Nigeria's current democratic era, Ogun State has witnessed the birth of a president and a vice president who have both served their maximum terms. The state has also undergone various transformations that have contributed to its development, a testament to ongoing efforts across several administrations.
As Ogun celebrates its 50th year, the Dapo Abiodun administration is nearing the end of its term but is fortunate to do so amidst this significant commemoration. The anniversary presents an opportunity for the government to renew its commitment to enhanced governance in its concluding period.
Throughout its history, Ogun State has experienced various transitional leadership phases, with military and civilian governors each leaving their mark on development. Amid this discourse, it's evident that measuring the impact of leadership remains a complex discussion.
As the state now thrives and prepares for the future, there is optimism that the upcoming transition to new leadership will mark a break from previous hostilities.
