Former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has announced his intention to vie for the Delta North senatorial position in the upcoming 2027 general elections, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision comes after considerable encouragement from political stakeholders within the district.
Okowa shared this development at his residence in Asaba during a meeting with a delegation of prominent political figures from the Delta North senatorial district.
The delegation, which included key individuals such as Monday Onyeme, former and current legislators, government appointees, and influential figures from the nine local government areas comprising the district, presented their request.
During the assembly, Ndudi Elumelu proposed Okowa as the candidate, a motion that was seconded by Nnamdi Ezechi. The proposal received widespread and unanimous approval from all present.
The leaders lauded Okowa, referring to him as a capable administrator and a unifying figure. They highlighted that his prior experience as both a senator and the state governor makes him exceptionally qualified to provide effective representation for the district.
In his response, Okowa conveyed his gratitude for the backing and officially confirmed his acceptance of the senatorial candidacy.
"I feel very loved and honoured by this show of support. For the calibre of persons here and the unity of purpose demonstrated, I have no choice but to accept," he stated.
He further elaborated, "I was going to call His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, to request of him, because the time is now short, to help me invite some leaders, so that I can bring the news that I would like to run for the Senate. So that I won’t start going to local governments without consulting with the leaders."
"I accept your request to run for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Delta North senatorial district."
"I want to reassure you that politics is a learning process; I will continue to learn on a daily basis."
Okowa also extended his thanks to the Anioma people for their consistent support throughout his political career, recalling their backing for his 2011 senatorial bid and subsequent gubernatorial campaigns. He indicated his reliance on their support once more for the 2027 elections.
Additionally, the former governor issued an apology to the district regarding what he termed a "mistake" in his endorsement of Ned Nwoko, the current senator for Delta North.
