The Winter Olympic Village in Italy has run out of condoms merely three days after the commencement of the Games, with athletes reportedly consuming 10,000 items.
An anonymous athlete disclosed to the Italian newspaper, La Stampa, "The supplies ran out in just three days. They promised us more will arrive, but who knows when."
Organizers typically provide thousands of free condoms to athletes within the Olympic Village as part of a long-standing initiative aimed at promoting safe sexual practices during the event. However, this year's stock was swiftly exhausted within 72 hours, according to circulating reports from inside the Village.
The unnamed athlete criticized the Olympic organizers for not being adequately generous with their supply, remarking that in Paris, athletes received a total of 300,000 condoms, roughly two per day each, whereas this Winter Games' allocation was markedly lower at less than 10,000, as noted in La Stampa’s report.
The governor of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, remarked last week that the distribution of free condoms to athletes in the Olympic Village should not be a source of embarrassment. "Yes, we provide free condoms to athletes in the Olympic village," he posted on social media. "Those who find it strange are unaware of the established Olympic practice, which began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people regarding the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases— a topic that should not cause shame."
Fontana also shared an Instagram post featuring Spanish figure skater Olivia Smart, who showcased the condoms branded with the yellow Lombardy Region logo. In the viral clip, she stated, "I found them. They have everything you need."
This year's Winter Olympics features approximately 2,900 athletes from 92 different national committees competing in 116 events across 16 disciplines. Notably, these Games have the highest proportion of female athletes (47%) in the history of the Winter Olympics.
