Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, a prominent Nigerian actress and singer, has shared insights into her decision to produce her new film, "Mother’s Love."
After a hiatus from the screen, the actress is set to return with the movie, which will premiere in cinemas on March 6.
The film features an impressive cast of actors, including Olumide Oworu, Noray Nehita, Ifeanyi Kalu, Lilian Afegbai, and Nosa Rex, and signifies the 48-year- old's debut as a director.
In a media interview published on her Instagram page, which PREMIUM TIMES accessed, she expressed her intention to convey emotionally resonant stories that reflect the resilience, strength, and sacrifices of women.
During the discussion, Jalade-Ekeinde recounted that the concept of "Mother’s Love" was inspired by her own experiences as both a mother and daughter, particularly as a first-born. She reflected on her relationship with her mother, who, as a first-time parent, had little time for her due to her responsibilities. The moments they shared were primarily on weekends, specifically Sundays, which felt overwhelming for her.
She admitted that she often failed to recognize her mother's tough love, perceiving instead her father’s charm as more nurturing. Over time, especially after her marriage, she began to understand and appreciate her mother's perspective, aided by her husband’s supportive relationship with her mother.
When asked how her character, Labake Rhodes, relates to her real-life experiences, Jalade-Ekeinde explained that during filming, she noticed many similarities between her character and herself. While she contributed to the screenplay, some parallels only became apparent as scenes unfolded during shooting, revealing deeper personal connections she did not initially realize.
The actress also shared the challenges of her dual role as director and actress in "Mother’s Love." She expressed an unexpected enjoyment in directing, finding it more satisfying than acting, which she has done for many years. She stated that directing felt natural, allowing her to leverage her mental capabilities instead of merely her physical appearance.
Acknowledging her absence from the screen in recent years, she emphasized her eagerness for audiences to experience her return. She expressed hope that viewers would resonate with the essence of traditional Nollywood acting showcased in her film, aiming to evoke joy and nostalgia.
In conclusion, she encouraged aspiring filmmakers to be as prepared as possible, highlighting that "Mother’s Love" is a family-centric film, meant not only for mothers and daughters but for all audiences. She indicated further plans for a sequel, asking audiences to join her on the journey and experience the film soon in cinemas.
