Ini Ememobong, the Fractional National Publicity Secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that the party is actively engaging in reconciliation discussions among its factions, all while ensuring its role as a formidable opposition in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

In a recent interview with ARISE NEWS, Ememobong elaborated that the PDP is focused on striking a balance by reconciling its diverse factions without losing its identity as a strong opposition party capable of presenting competent candidates at all levels.

"The current situation stems from extreme political maneuvers that risk leading us toward a one-party system. Both internal issues within the PDP and external pressures have played a role in this trajectory. Moving forward, the actions taken in recent discussions emphasize the party's commitment to reconciliation. It was determined that postponing the national caucus was essential in fostering a peaceful environment for dialogue and to demonstrate goodwill towards this process," he stated.

Ememobong pointed out that the decision to delay the national caucus reflects a strategic intent to keep the PDP functioning independently as a central opposition party rather than becoming an offshoot of another political entity. He reiterated the importance of preparing for the 2027 elections by presenting candidates capable of competing effectively.

He explained, "The resolution focuses on ensuring that the PDP remains a distinct entity that can launch candidates at all levels for the upcoming elections. This set a foundation for addressing factional disagreements and pursuing reconciliation."

The PDP faction has also been scrutinizing various ongoing court decisions that may affect their strategies. "The committee formed for reconciliation is committed to a comprehensive approach. This entails ensuring we nominate capable candidates who resonate with the electorate, rather than simply participating out of frustration with the current ruling party," he added.

Ememobong also touched upon the subject of the presidential candidacy within the PDP, conveying the necessity for open-mindedness in reconciliation efforts while preserving the party's identity as an opposition force. He suggested that effective planning is critical to navigate the unpredictable nature of electoral politics.

He voiced concerns regarding potential disunity within the party if proper measures are not taken for reconciliation. “It is vital to acknowledge the risks of politicizing the judiciary while emphasizing that there exists a precarious balance between hope and delusion in our politics. The perception among various factions that they back President Tinubu for a second term complicates the search for a viable candidate."

Ememobong concluded by asserting that the ongoing reconciliation efforts within the PDP aim to forge a robust opposition capable of addressing the needs and concerns of the electorate, reiterating that the pursuit of peace must also maintain the party’s identity and strength in opposition.
