Pentagon Clarifies: Khamenei's Death Resulted from Israeli Action, Not US

The Pentagon's top policy official stated that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an Israeli operation, distancing the US from the incident. During a Senate testimony, Elbridge Colby clarified that the action was not part of any US military operations.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon's policy chief emphasized that the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was attributed to an Israeli military strike rather than an American initiative.

Elbridge Colby, while addressing the Senate Armed Services Committee, clarified that the strike which resulted in Khamenei's demise along with other prominent Iranian figures was not included in any military campaign led by the United States.

"Those are Israeli operations," Colby stated firmly when questioned by lawmakers regarding whether the US aimed to instigate regime change in Iran through military actions.

Colby's composed response was in stark contrast to President Donald Trump's rhetoric, who has painted the conflict in broad and victorious terms since the military strikes commenced.

Trump remarked, "For 47 years, the Iranian regime has called for America’s demise, engaging in continuous bloodshed and extensive violence," during a statement on Saturday.

In his social media communications, Trump indicated that Khamenei could not evade detection via US intelligence and advanced tracking systems, adding that in close cooperation with Israel, there were no defenses available to Khamenei or other leaders who faced similar fates.

This discrepancy in messaging raises broader inquiries regarding the current administration's strategy toward Iran.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated on Monday that the US took action only after gaining knowledge of Israel's intent to launch an attack, implying that the US response was more reactive than part of a comprehensive strategy.

"The goals of the military operations... center on mitigating the Islamic Republic's capability to exert military influence against us, our installations, our troops, as well as our allies and partners within the region and beyond," Rubio articulated.

He highlighted the main targets as Iran's growing missile capabilities and the production capacities for such munitions, in addition to components of the Iranian navy.

These objectives, he argued, constituted clear and attainable aims.

When pressed by Jack Reed, the leading Democrat on the panel, about how the elimination of Iran's supreme leader aligned with these goals, Colby reiterated his focus on the United States' military campaign objectives, asserting that the actions against Khamenei's leadership were indeed the result of Israeli operations.

While Trump has publicly invited the Iranian populace to seize what he called an "unprecedented opportunity" to dismantle their government, Colby reiterated that the US military operations were directed at degrading Iran's military capabilities rather than explicitly aimed at regime change.
