December in Lagos is never a quiet affair. It makes its presence known with relentless traffic, continuous music, and late-night revelry that often spills into the dawn. Even before the term “Detty December” gained traction, Nigerians were already familiar with December as a period of movement, reunions, and joyous releases.
Throughout this time, Pepsi has remained a steadfast presence. From lively street parties to headline concerts and DJ-driven events, Pepsi has intricately integrated itself into the essence of December in Nigeria—not merely as an onlooker but as an essential component.
Many in the entertainment industry attest to Pepsi's role as a vital partner, ensuring that large concerts turn out to be successful.
“Every major event in December, every notable activity, [with the Afrobeat…] big three,” asserts entertainment executive Bizzle Osikoya. “There’s no significant event in December where Pepsi hasn’t been involved.”
DJs, who are pivotal to Tanzania's nightlife, often see Pepsi's involvement as purposeful. DJ Obi recalls the brand's early support at important moments.
“When we first launched Obi’s House in December, Pepsi was our sole supporter. Their presence was everywhere, and it mattered,” he reflects.
This support extended beyond mere branding. Pepsi was among the first to recognize the vital role of DJs as cultural influencers, showcasing them on product packaging and providing prominent platforms that celebrate their influence in shaping soundscapes and nightlife experiences. Media personality Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi encapsulates this sentiment aptly.
“Pepsi has become intertwined with our culture. It’s as essential as rice and stew; it’s always been there,” she states.
Pepsi has also been instrumental behind the scenes in shaping the December experience. Toolz recalls how exclusive access to Pepsi-sponsored event calendars has allowed fans to structure their seasonal plans effectively.
“It enabled us to organize our days, weeks, outfits—everything,” she expresses.
Over time, the brand's unwavering presence has rendered it an instinctive choice. Whether at the Mainland Block Party, Obi’s House, DJ-led sessions, or large-scale concerts, Pepsi has not only kept pace with cultural trends but has also bolstered them.
As the new year unfolds and the clamor of December subsides, one fact stands out: Pepsi has been a fundamental part of Detty December long before it achieved its current popularity.
