Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate, has openly criticized the reported use of tear gas on Nigerians who were peacefully advocating for fair and credible elections.
In a statement shared on his Facebook account on Tuesday, Obi voiced his alarm regarding what he sees as the suppression of citizens who are exercising their democratic rights. He expressed dismay that those who once positioned themselves as champions of democracy are now acting against it.
He pointed out that such actions could jeopardize public confidence and destabilize the principles that underpin good governance.
Obi urged all Nigerians to stay vigilant and united in their efforts to safeguard the democratic process in the nation. He reiterated his demand for increased transparency in elections, especially highlighting the need for real-time electronic transmission of results directly from polling places to prevent manipulation and restore public trust in the electoral system.
In conclusion, he encouraged Nigerians to maintain hope and dedication to building a society rooted in justice, accountability, and credible elections, reaffirming his belief that “a New Nigeria is Possible.”
In a strong statement shared on Twitter, Obi remarked, “Once again, we are demonstrating to the world why we are seen as a 'Now Disgraced Nation.' Today, in Nigeria, harmless citizens peacefully fulfilling their constitutional rights were tear-gassed for merely seeking what is just: free, fair, and credible elections.”
