Peter Obi, the past presidential candidate for the Labour Party, stated that Nigerians should enjoy peace rather than live under the threat of terrorism.
This statement was made in response to alarming reports indicating that terrorists are commanding individuals to evacuate their ancestral homes.
In a message posted on his verified X account on Sunday, March 22, Obi expressed his dismay at what he termed as "a failure of governance and humanity."
He said: "What we are witnessing in Borgaja and various communities in Sokoto State, and indeed across the nation, is devastating. It is indicative of a total collapse of governance and human rights.
"The fact that terrorists can issue mandates for citizens to leave their homes without any repercussions is both tragic and intolerable. This situation suggests that in some regions of our country, non-state actors have taken on the role of the state—determining where people can live and the conditions of their lives.
"This is not how a nation is meant to operate. How did we arrive at a stage where Nigerians take orders from terrorists instead of their own government? I have repeatedly stated that a nation cannot progress when its citizens are engulfed in fear.
"This issue transcends mere security concerns; it has escalated to a national crisis. The fundamental duty of every government is to ensure the safety of its citizens and their property. Nigerians should experience peace, not be left vulnerable to brutality."
Obi's comments reflect a growing apprehension about the deteriorating security landscape in Nigeria, emphasizing the urgent need for effective governance and protection.
