A pilot accused of being involved in a pedophile ring was arrested by law enforcement in view of astonished passengers right before a flight was scheduled to depart.
Sérgio Antônio Lopes, 60, employed by LATAM Airlines in Brazil, is under investigation as part of a crackdown named ‘Fasten your Seatbelt,’ which focuses on allegations of sexual exploitation of minors and distribution of illicit images.
Video footage from São Paulo police captured the moment Lopes was taken into custody on Monday, February 9, at Congonhas Airport, moments prior to the aircraft's departure.
A police officer was recorded informing, “You can call for an emergency pilot because he’s been arrested.” Lopes was reportedly given permission to enter the cockpit to collect his personal items and appeared again in handcuffs as he was escorted away by officers.
Extra videos show Lopes being led through the airport by law enforcement to a waiting car.
The allegations against Lopes include transporting underage girls to hotels using counterfeit identification and operating a pedophile network that engaged in sharing explicit images and committing sexual abuse.
Authorities have also detained a 55-year-old woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, accused of enabling the abuse of her granddaughters, who were aged eight, ten, and fourteen at the time of the purported offenses.
During a press briefing, police chief Ivalda Aleixo declared that Lopes had been involved in the sexual assault of children and suggested his criminal activities had persisted for at least eight years.
“He maintained contact with some victims and even brought them to motels under adult aliases. He began abusing one victim at the age of eight; she is now 12, while another has only just turned 18. Upon meeting these children, he committed sexual assault,” remarked Ms. Aleixo.
In addition to the two arrests, police are executing eight search warrants against four others who are part of the ongoing investigation. This operation is occurring in São Paulo and Guararema, within the metropolitan area.
Authorities seized Lopes’ mobile phone, reportedly containing evidence indicating the exploitation of victims from other regions in Brazil, and they are probing into the individuals with whom he may have shared this illicit material.
"There is substantial evidence pointing towards the distribution of this content to other parties, in addition to personal use," added Ms. Ivalda.
