The Nigerian police have successfully apprehended three individuals believed to be part of a significant armed robbery group in Kaduna, recovering a total of 10 stolen vehicles.
Operatives from the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad (FID- STS) conducted the operation, resulting in the arrests of Abubakar Musa (36), Hassan Umar (30), and Joshua Raphael (20) on March 16th.
Official reports indicate that preliminary investigations have identified Abubakar Musa, the suspected leader of the syndicate, as a dismissed corporal from the Nigerian Army. He is accused of impersonating a serving soldier to avoid detection while orchestrating robbery activities across the state.
Modus Operandi
According to a statement released on Friday by Anthony Placid, the Force Public Relations Officer, the syndicate's primary activity involved stealing vehicles. They would then alter or remove registration details to obscure their ownership and identity before transporting the vehicles to different locations.
The recovered vehicles include multiple Toyota Hilux trucks, Toyota Corolla cars, a Pontiac Vibe GT, a Honda, a Lexus, and a Toyota RAV4 SUV. A notable number of these vehicles were found without any registration plates, suggesting a sophisticated car theft operation extending beyond Kaduna.
Authorities have stated that efforts are currently underway to locate other members of the syndicate who are still at large and to recover any further stolen assets.
Kaduna Security Landscape
This recent success in combating vehicle theft occurs amidst ongoing security operations within Kaduna State. The region has faced considerable challenges with various criminal activities, including banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery within its urban areas.
While rural districts like Birnin Gwari, Giwa, and parts of Southern Kaduna have experienced persistent attacks from armed groups, security forces have also intensified their focus on dismantling criminal networks operating in cities such as Kaduna metropolis and Zaria.
Reports from security agencies suggest that coordinated, intelligence-driven operations involving the police, military, and other security services are beginning to show positive outcomes. These efforts have led to numerous arrests of suspected criminals, the rescue of kidnapped individuals, and the recovery of illegal firearms in recent times.
IGP Commends Operatives
Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has extended his commendation to the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and commitment.
Mr. Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force's dedication to combating crime nationwide and ensuring the security of citizens and their property.
“Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate and recover additional exhibits,” the statement from the police concluded.
The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and to continue reporting any relevant information to security agencies promptly.
