Security operatives in Zamfara State have uncovered more than 30 bodies suspected to be those of armed bandits following an intense gun battle in farmlands surrounding Bukuyum town. The operation took place after combined security personnel and local vigilante groups successfully repelled an offensive launched against the community on Wednesday, October 28.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, the confrontation unfolded as security forces intensified ongoing clearance operations aimed at flushing out criminal elements from the Bukuyum Local Government Area. The armed attackers attempted to breach the town but were met with superior firepower, leading to a fierce exchange.
What were the official findings from the police?
Yazid Abubakar, a deputy superintendent of police and the command's spokesperson, detailed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. He explained that a sweep of the surrounding agrarian fields after the firefight yielded the grim discovery.
“Following the engagement, more than thirty (30) bodies believed to be those of neutralised bandits were reportedly discovered in surrounding farmlands,” Mr Abubakar stated.
He pointed out that criminal networks operating within the region frequently attempt to evacuate their casualties during and after armed encounters. Nevertheless, authorities noted that the exact death toll remains subject to rigorous verification.
What is the current security situation in the area?
The police update did not mention any casualties or injuries sustained by security personnel or local residents during the thwarted invasion. Officials reiterated that the armed offensive failed to breach the town's perimeter.
Mr Abubakar added that continuous counter-banditry operations have successfully dislodged several criminal factions from parts of Zamfara State, though specific details regarding their current whereabouts were withheld.
Joint patrols involving conventional security agencies and community protection groups remain active across Bukuyum to forestall further threats and restore absolute stability.
