Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, March 8, made a heartfelt plea for an end to the increasing violence in the Middle East, praying for the cessation of the "roar of bombs" as the war instigated by US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran entered its ninth day.

In his address after the Angelus prayer, the US-born pontiff highlighted the deep concern and sorrow caused by the unfolding events in the region.

He noted that the ongoing violence, destruction, and the prevailing atmosphere of hatred and fear raise alarm about the possibility of the conflict escalating and involving additional nations.

The Pope cautioned that this crisis could also jeopardize the stability of neighboring countries, particularly Lebanon, which he referred to as a cherished nation that risks slipping back into instability.

His remarks came amidst heightened tensions throughout the region, as Iran prepares to appoint a new supreme leader following the recent passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This transition follows US-Israeli airstrikes that targeted various facilities in and around Tehran.

The strikes devastated fuel depots and ignited fires that resulted in thick smoke enveloping large areas of the Iranian capital.

In retaliation, Iran has launched missile and drone strikes targeting multiple countries within the Gulf and broader Middle East.

US President Donald Trump has indicated that sending American ground troops to Iran remains a possible option, while he maintains that the military operations are advancing swiftly.

Pope Leo XIV called upon all involved to seek peace, expressing hope that the sound of warfare would give way to dialogue.

“I pray that the roar of the bombs may cease, that weapons may fall silent, and that space for dialogue may open so the voices of the people can be heard,” he stated.
