President Bola Tinubu is currently overseeing a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The session is slated to officially endorse the appointment of Tunji Disu, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, as the permanent IGP.
The closed-door meeting, which commenced at noon on Monday, aims to confirm Disu’s nomination following the resignation of the previous Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Just last week, President Tinubu designated Disu as the acting IGP.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated that, in line with the Police Act of 2020, "President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council in the near future to officially ratify AIG Disu’s appointment as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. Subsequently, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for approval."
Attendees at this high-profile meeting include Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, along with various state governors and other statutory members of the Council.
The President chairs the Nigeria Police Council, which is composed of the governors from all 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
Established as an advisory body under the Police Act 2020, this Council has a pivotal role in overseeing major policing issues.
