President Bola Tinubu has urged the nation's traditional rulers to assume leadership in peacebuilding efforts and fortifying stability at the community level. This directive was issued on Friday in Lagos during the presentation of the autobiography of Oba (Dr) Samuel Olu Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu highlighted the enduring significance of traditional institutions in governance, especially given the current rise in security threats and societal divisions.
"Our royal fathers serve as the most direct conduit between the government and the populace at the local level. Your palaces should continue to be hubs for fostering peace, resolving disputes, and providing ethical direction," Tinubu stated.
The president encouraged monarchs to actively engage in addressing the nation's security issues and promoting unity across diverse ethnic and social groups.
He further advised that beyond their ceremonial duties, royal leaders must act as stabilizing influences within their respective domains, utilizing their authority to foster harmonious coexistence and reinforce social bonds.
"The responsibility for peace and security does not rest solely with the government; it is a shared obligation," Tinubu affirmed.
He also implored monarchs to champion dialogue, discourage acts of violence, and bolster unity within their communities.
Tinubu characterized the event, attended by political figures, traditional leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps, as more than just a book launch, but a reflection on leadership, public service, and the national values exemplified by Oba Falae.
He praised Oba Falae's extensive career, noting his contributions in public service, economic management, and cultural leadership, describing him as a figure who bridges traditional customs and contemporary governance.
Reviewing Falae's career trajectory, from his role as Minister of Finance to his current position as the Olu-Abo of Ilu-Abo in Ondo State, Tinubu pointed out the remarkable combination of technical expertise and traditional authority.
He also commended Falae's tenure in government, characterized by financial discipline and clear policy direction, suggesting his efforts were instrumental in shaping Nigeria's economic landscape during pivotal moments. Tinubu also acknowledged Falae's leadership as chairman of the National Executive Committee of Afenifere since 2025.
He assured that his administration is committed to enhancing cooperation with traditional institutions and pledged increased engagement in initiatives aimed at improving security, social harmony, and local development.
Tinubu stressed the symbolic importance of Falae's autobiography, viewing it not only as a personal narrative but also as a representation of Nigeria's journey through adversity and its persistent resilience.
He concluded by expressing hope that the book would impart valuable lessons on perseverance, patriotism, and integrity to younger generations.
