The Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council and the National Moonsighting Committee announced that they received confirmations from several Moonsighting Committees throughout Nigeria, verifying the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
In a statement penned by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee and Wazirin Sokoto, it was confirmed that His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has acknowledged these reports and officially declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the commencement of Ramadan 1447AH.
"His Eminence, the Sultan extends congratulations to the Muslim community in Nigeria and prays for Allah’s guidance and blessings,” the statement indicated.
The Sultan further encouraged the Muslim Ummah to continue their prayers for the peace, progress, and prosperity of the nation, wishing everyone a joyful Ramadan Kareem. He implored that Allah (SWT) accept their religious observances, amen.
In related news, a committee member, preferring to remain anonymous, disclosed that the Sultan is currently overseas and mentioned that an official announcement regarding Ramadan will soon be made by the Shehu of Borno, who serves as the deputy president general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
