Rebecca Gayheart recently opened up about one of her last moments with her deceased husband, actor Eric Dane, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, who passed away last month at 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

In a conversation with Variety, Gayheart shared that during his final weeks, Dane engaged with ElevenLabs, an AI company, to recreate his voice utilizing recordings from his previous film and television performances, as the illness increasingly impaired his speech. She noted that this endeavor was vital to him as he wished to maintain communication and leave a message for their daughters, Billie, age 16, and Georgia, age 14.

Gayheart mentioned Dane was excited to hear the result, and when the synthetic voice was completed, it turned into an emotional experience for the family. She described how Dane became emotional upon hearing it, affecting everyone present in the room.

They subsequently played the voice recording for their daughters, who expressed that it sounded just like their father. Gayheart added that having this recording offered some solace for the family as they faced the progression of his illness, although they were unable to fully utilize the technology before his passing.

She emphasized the significance of voice in one’s identity, especially for actors. Reports indicate that ElevenLabs intends to provide ongoing assistance to individuals with neurological disorders that impact speech and is striving to extend the service to more users in the future.
