As Nigeria commemorated Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2026, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar'Adua, who chairs the Senate Committee on Army, renewed his calls for enhanced welfare and year- round support for military personnel, emphasizing that the tribute to fallen heroes must extend beyond one-off ceremonies.
In a statement released on Thursday, Yar'Adua characterized this day as a time for national appreciation and a reminder of the significant responsibilities shouldered by the members of the Armed Forces. He honored the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service of Nigeria’s unity and security, noting that their contributions are integral to the nation’s ongoing stability.
While recognizing the actions taken by the Federal Government to enhance military conditions, the senator contended that welfare improvements need to be continual and must address the realities faced on the ground. He stated that contemporary security threats require better training, modernized equipment, upgraded infrastructure, and all-encompassing support systems for both active personnel and their families.
Yar'Adua remarked that military service is among the most challenging professions in Nigeria, warranting unwavering support from both federal and state authorities. He declared, “Support for our troops should be consistent and not limited to a particular season,” urging government entities at every level to prioritize substantial remuneration and long-term welfare initiatives.
The senator also encouraged Nigerians to embrace Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a collective moment of unity, reinforcing the shared responsibility for upholding peace and security. He urged the public to express appreciation for the Armed Forces through respect, solidarity, and support for programs that bolster morale.
Observed annually on January 15, Armed Forces Remembrance Day pays tribute to military members who have died in the line of duty, including those who participated in peacekeeping operations and internal security missions.
Yar’Adua concluded his remarks by reaffirming the commitment of the National Assembly to implement legislative actions that protect the dignity, welfare, and operational efficiency of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, while also praying for the eternal repose of the nation’s fallen heroes.
