A total of 25 underage girls, who were working as sex workers, have been saved from a hotel located in Aguleri, Anambra State.
According to a video shared on social media by a local resident, the girls revealed that they were trafficked from Ebonyi State for the purpose of prostitution.
In the footage, several of the girls admitted they had been transported into Anambra by individuals they referred to as their madams, originating from states such as Akwa Ibom, Abia, and Niger.
One survivor, a 14-year-old named Divine, recounted that a woman had approached her and her cousin in Abakaliki, offering them jobs in Anambra State.
"She asked us if we wanted to go to Anambra for work. I thought maybe I could send money back home to my family, so we accepted her offer. Along with my cousin and her friend, we were brought here," Divine explained.
"Upon our arrival, we were informed about the nature of the work, but we resisted, insisting we wanted to go back. However, they insisted that we must repay the transportation costs incurred to bring us here."
"We have been attempting to flee, but they have prevented us. We once managed to escape but were caught. Even during our periods, they provided us with cotton to ensure we wouldn’t stain the beds or men," she elaborated.
Divine's mother, who tracked down her daughter in Aguleri, reported the situation to local authorities, indicating that Divine had been missing since October 2025. During the video, Divine’s cousin identified herself as 15 years old, while another friend was 19.
In response, the Anambra State government has denounced these practices, calling for a thorough investigation. They expressed their strong disapproval of child trafficking, sexual exploitation, and any abuses against minors.
Dr. Law Mefor, the state’s information commissioner, highlighted that such violations are severe breaches of human dignity and violate Nigerian laws, including the Child Rights Act, which has been enforced in the state.
He stated, "The government has instructed relevant security and regulatory bodies to urgently investigate the claims, ascertain the facts, ensure the safety of any minors involved, and bring to justice all perpetrators and accomplices involved in these crimes."
He reassured that those engaging in such grievous acts in Anambra will face the law, emphasizing the government's commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals in the state.
