Documents released as part of an extensive archive reveal that two notable Nigerians were earmarked for a high-profile dinner with Jeffrey Epstein in 2018. The suggested guests were Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, and Emir Muhammad Sanusi II of Kano.

Dated May 21, 2018, this email came before Epstein's arrest and death, highlighting the high-caliber individuals he sought to engage with.

The release of these emails, totaling around 3.5 million files connected to Epstein, has sparked renewed interest in his interactions with prominent figures. Epstein, a financier and convicted sexual offender, passed away in a New York prison in 2019.

The documents have stirred up public discussions, especially with the significant names involved. Much of the content remained heavily redacted, leaving many to question the nature of the relationships Epstein maintained.

The U.S. Department of Justice has acknowledged collecting approximately 6 million pages relating to Epstein's case, but only about 3.5 million have been made public, raising concerns about the completeness of the information shared.

Also featured among the emails was a discussion between Epstein and Jide Zeitlin, a Nigerian-American businessman known for his role as the former CEO of Tapestry, Inc., the parent company for brands like Coach and Kate Spade. Zeitlin was asked to compile a list of “two or three out-of-the-box thinkers” for what was dubbed a “fun dinner” scheduled for June 2018.

In his response, Zeitlin highlighted both Okonjo-Iweala and Sanusi, alongside other notable figures such as Steve Bannon, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and others from various fields, demonstrating the expansive network Epstein was attempting to cultivate.

Mr. Zeitlin characterized Sanusi as “probably the most out of the box name” on the list, suggesting a well-thought-out selection of guests characterized by their independence in thought and influence.

Despite these considerations for the guest list, it remains unclear whether the dinner occurred or if formal invitations were ever sent to these prominent individuals. Spokespersons for both Okonjo-Iweala and Sanusi have expressed that they are unaware of any invitations from Epstein for such gatherings, with Okonjo-Iweala’s media advisor stating she had no connections with Epstein.

Similarly, Sanusi's representatives echoed this sentiment, asserting that there had been no communication regarding the purported dinner. The incident highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Epstein’s dealings and the powerful figures he purportedly tried to associate with.

The plethora of released documents also showcases Epstein’s pattern of hosting influential figures, often blending celebrities, politicians, and business leaders at his elaborate events, some of which included notable African personalities. Reports have indicated involvement from global leaders, including former South African President Jacob Zuma, raising further questions about the scope and implications of Epstein's social networks.

As investigations into Epstein's legacy continue, the dialogue surrounding his parties and the individuals he associated with presents a growing concern over the accessibility of influential figures to potential wrongdoers, especially in light of Epstein's history with the law.

Ultimately, the implications of these revelations are vast, as they weave into the larger narrative of accountability and the dynamics of power both within Nigeria and beyond.
