Russian military units are allegedly facing major issues with battlefield communications, resulting in cases of friendly fire after the shutdown of unauthorized Starlink satellite internet terminals. Statements from Ukrainian officials and pro-Russian bloggers highlight that this disruption has plunged Russian command and control into disarray.

The Crimean Tatar partisan group, Atesh, shared on Telegram that the lack of Starlink connectivity has led to "fatal incidents of friendly fire." One reported case in the Zaporizhzhia region indicated that due to an entire communication system failure, Russian forces mistakenly fired upon one another, which led to the decimation of a 12-member assault unit.

The situation arises from SpaceX’s recent enforcement action, initiated at the request of Ukrainian authorities. The company established a mandatory pre- registration system, creating a "white list" of authorized terminals, which effectively disabled grey and black market Starlink devices utilized by Russian troops.

Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday that these measures to halt unauthorized Starlink usage have been successful. Mykhailo Fedorov, the Ukrainian Defence Minister, remarked, "The Starlink white list is functioning—authorized terminals are operational. We are continuing our verification process and collaborating with SpaceX for swift terminal registration."

Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the defence minister of Ukraine, referred to this situation as a "catastrophe" for the Russian military, noting that the command of their troops has disintegrated, causing numerous assault operations to be suspended.

Although the full extent of the disruption remains unconfirmed, numerous Ukrainian sources report it to be substantial. Russia has reportedly relied on thousands of illicit Starlink terminals to facilitate battlefield communications and coordinate drone attacks. Previously, Ukraine has associated these terminals with drone strikes aimed at civilian locations.
