Scarlet Gomez, the actress portraying Wura Amoo-Adeleke in the Showmax Original series 'Wura', shared insights into her character's evolution ahead of the launch of the fourth season.
The series, produced by Rogers Ofime, is set to premiere on March 30, with the release date confirmed during a virtual press briefing that was attended by PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday.
During the session, Gomez revealed that her previously formidable character would face new challenges, showcasing a more vulnerable side as changes in power dynamics begin to challenge her stronghold.
Gomez noted, “In this season, viewers will witness Wura in ways previously unseen. She will display more emotion and vulnerability. Audiences have never seen her in a tough situation before; she feels as if she is on the verge of losing everything, and the obstacles are different this time. Health issues are also part of the storyline.”
“There are deeper dimensions to her character now that will allow people to connect with her on a more emotional level. Previously, Wura appeared untouchable, but now she faces struggles that resonate with ordinary people. She is portrayed as less invulnerable than people assumed,” she added.
In the new season, Wura discovers that Tumi, portrayed by Martha Ehinome, is her daughter. This revelation compels her to reassess her life and relationships.
Gomez expressed excitement for the upcoming season, anticipating viewers' reactions as Wura embarks on a new journey. “Wura is grappling with the realization that Tumi is her daughter, which adds a significant layer to her character. Despite these changes, Wura remains true to herself, but viewers will see a different and more complex side of her.”
Atinuke Babatunde, who serves as the executive head of content and channels at MultiChoice West Africa, stated that providing premium content is a top priority for the company. She emphasized that 'Wura' conveys messages that are quintessentially African, reflecting themes like power, family, and the consequences of actions.
She mentioned that the previous season had been well-received, leading to a continued demand for more episodes. “At its core, 'Wura' reflects familiar themes in African society, such as the balance of good and evil and the complexities of family relationships,” Babatunde noted.
Furthermore, Babatunde announced that this new season would feature an impressive total of 130 episodes, with content accessible to viewers across all DSTV and GoTV packages, ensuring broader exposure for the series.
“This strategic choice of extending the series entails airing it daily, thereby enhancing our viewers’ engagement. 'Wura' will be shown on African Magic Showcase at 8 PM and on African Magic Family at 8:30 PM starting on March 30,” she added.
Screenwriter Musa Jeffery highlighted that the fourth season would delve deeper into character development, promising a balance of high production quality, an impressive cast, and stories that resonate with viewers. He stressed that this season would shift focus towards the characters’ internal struggles, providing a richer narrative depth as audiences engage with Wura’s journey in a more profound way.
He stated, “We aim for the audience to experience a more nuanced emotional response to Wura. The prior season portrayed her as formidable; this new season seeks to foster understanding of her motivations and the circumstances that shaped her.”
In discussing Wura’s character arc, Jeffery indicated that the creative team intends to present her as a nuanced antagonist whom audiences may sympathize with. He noted that the character of Iyabo Kuti, played by Ego Ihenacho, evolves beyond a grieving mother, taking on a more active and complex role to resonate with viewers.
Through these narrative shifts and thematic explorations, the new season of 'Wura' aims to challenge the interpretation of good and evil, inviting viewers to ponder whether such traits are inherent or shaped by one’s upbringing. The principal theme centers around Tumi’s quest for justice, framing Wura’s actions within this broader moral context.
