Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have taken decisive action by detaining individuals suspected of cattle rustling, recovering stolen cattle, and killing two armed assailants during a series of operations in Benue State. Reports indicate that these actions were conducted between March 3 and 7, following intelligence related to criminal activities within local communities in the area of joint operations.
In a statement released on Sunday, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, the Information Officer for OPWS, revealed that personnel from the Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Battalion IX intercepted a Sienna bus transporting three adult cows believed to have been stolen. This incident occurred during a patrol in Obagaji, which is part of the Agatu Local Government Area.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident: Mamuda Hussein, aged 28; Sunday Moses, 35; and Teny Musa, 22.
Initial investigations suggest that the cattle were being transported in a vehicle that was displaying a counterfeit license plate purportedly issued by the Kogi State Government.
Zubairu further stated that the presumed leader of the rustling gang allegedly admitted to having been contacted by two individuals to procure the stolen cattle.
In a separate operation on March 4, members of the Chief of Army Staff Intervention Battalion XV set an ambush in Abuja village, located in Agatu LGA, after receiving intel concerning the movement of suspected terrorists. During this operation, one armed assailant was killed while others managed to flee the scene.
The OPWS spokesperson mentioned that the troops seized a round of 7.62mm special ammunition from the bag of the deceased suspect.
