Residents of Share, located in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, narrowly escaped a significant tragedy due to the prompt and coordinated response by security forces.
On Sunday evening, suspected bandits executed a premeditated assault on the community. However, the collaboration between the Nigerian Army, forest guards, and local hunters compelled the attackers to flee without inflicting any harm. According to eyewitnesses, gunfire erupted around 7:50 PM, coinciding with the time residents were preparing for Isha’i prayers. The attackers reportedly emerged from nearby vegetation, seemingly choosing this moment to strike when vigilance was at its lowest.
Local Government Chairman, Hadji Femi Yusuf, remarked that this was not the first occurrence of such an incursion in Share, but emphasized that “the security forces and forest guards showed a commitment to maintaining the peace of the community.”
Abdulazeez Ahmed, the Youth Leader of Share, shared his appreciation for the swift intervention of the security personnel in an interview with Daily Trust. “We cannot quantify the potential casualties if they had successfully occupied the first building they encountered,” he stated.
He noted that the attackers faced significant time constraints due to the swift actions of the security forces. “The assault took place at 7:50 PM, which is outside the typical hours of vigilance. The encounter occurred very close to the Local Government Secretariat, indicating the boldness of the assailants. Their approach appeared premeditated, yet the security team effectively held them back,” Ahmed elaborated.
Moreover, Ahmed suggested that recent pressure from security operations in other areas of Kwara North might have prompted the attackers to target Share. He commended the role of the forest guards, asserting that with local security and patrol efforts in place, the community stands a better chance against such attacks.
