The Senate has highlighted the necessity for the full and prompt implementation of funding allocations for the defense sector, cautioning that any delays could jeopardize Nigeria’s battle against insecurity.

This call for action occurred during a budget defense meeting on Wednesday, during which the Minister of Defence presented an evaluation of the ministry's 2025 performance along with the proposed budget for 2026 to the lawmakers.

Senator Ahmed Lawan, who chairs the Senate Committee on Defence, stated the National Assembly's dedication to ensuring that the armed forces have adequate funding to fulfill their constitutional duties.

"We are prepared on our side to ensure that the armed forces obtain the necessary resources," Lawan affirmed.

Despite this commitment, he expressed concern over the slow progress in executing the 2025 defense budget.

“The implementation has been sluggish. If we cannot fully execute the 2025 budget, how can we effectively plan for 2026?” he questioned.

Lawan emphasized that funding for defense cannot be handled like other sectors that might not face immediate consequences from delays.

“You cannot delay defense funding. Any postponement advantages those who threaten our security. We must ensure that the funds allocated for our armed forces and security agencies are fully utilized to safeguard Nigerians,” he stressed.

He further mentioned that providing weapons, equipment, and logistics must align with the timely release and proper use of allocated funds.

The committee chairman characterized the session as part of the Senate's oversight role, noting that lawmakers are assessing segments of the 2025 budget that were underutilized and are being carried over into the 2026 proposal.

“We need to understand what has transpired and guarantee improved performance moving forward,” he remarked, reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to transparency and accountability in defense expenditure.

During his address, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, acknowledged the ongoing security challenges but assured lawmakers of the ministry's determination to enhance outcomes.

“Challenges remain, but we are resolved to improve,” Musa stated.
