Authorities in Anambra State have arrested and detained six police officers accused of extorting N200,000 from a trader based in Onitsha, a major city in the state.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the state's police spokesperson, announced the development in a statement on Monday.

The detentions came in response to a video that circulated on Facebook, where a woman detailed her husband's harrowing experience with the officers, claiming they tortured him and extorted money from him.

In the viral video, the anonymous woman explained that her husband was stopped by armed police officers while transporting cartons of malt in his white bus, which he had purchased from the Onitsha Relief Market on March 12.

She stated that her husband provided the vehicle's documentation when requested by the officers, who subsequently verified that everything was in order. However, they alleged that the vehicle should have a different color than white.

“This vehicle has been in use for over 20 years,” the woman asserted in Igbo.

The officers then instructed her husband to approach their superior officer located in a police vehicle near the flyover. According to her, when he complied, the other officers prevented him from exiting the vehicle, handcuffed him, and accused him of being a criminal, demanding N500,000 in payment.

“Ultimately, my husband was coerced into transferring N200,000 to them via a Point of Sale (PoS) operator,” she revealed.

She noted that he felt pressured to pay the money due to fears that the officers might be kidnappers based on their threats and behavior.

After reporting the incident to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Okpoko Divisional Headquarters, Austin Okafor, they were able to identify the officers involved. The DPO dispatched a team to verify the claims, during which the officers initially denied any wrongdoing but eventually admitted to the encounter and returned the money to her husband after confirming the incident.

In the Monday statement, Superintendent Ikenga indicated that Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu had ordered the six officers' detention pending further investigation.

While the accused officers were not named, the group includes two assistant superintendents of police and four police inspectors.

Ikenga also mentioned that higher-ranking officers connected to the incident are facing inquiries, and statements from the implicated officers have been documented as part of the ongoing investigation process.

Additionally, police authorities are seeking to apprehend the POS operator linked to the incident, citing potential complicity in the extortion.

Ikenga assured the public in Anambra that the police department is approaching this issue with the seriousness it warrants.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident; allegations of police brutality, extortion, and unlawful killings persist in Nigeria despite efforts by authorities to impose disciplinary measures, including dismissals from service.

This latest controversy comes shortly after three police officers were dismissed in Imo State for alleged kidnapping and extorting N1.7 million from a victim at gunpoint. Furthermore, two months prior, a police shooting resulted in the death of a motorcyclist in Ebonyi State.

Concerns over police conduct are compounded by a history of similar events, including the fatal shooting of a commercial motorcyclist in Abakaliki in 2018 and a notable incident in Bayelsa State where officers extorted N3 million from an individual at gunpoint, only to return it weeks later after the victim escalated the alarm to police hierarchy.
