The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has requested Senate President Godswill Akpabio to mandate the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee to reveal the identities and roles of all officials reportedly involved in the alleged misappropriation of ₦200 trillion from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), regardless of their political or social status.
SERAP also called on him to direct the Committee to release comprehensive details of the ongoing investigation, which should include audit reports, financial data, and any official correspondence that the Committee relied upon, along with clear timelines for when implicated officials will testify and when the investigation will conclude.
Furthermore, SERAP urged Akpabio to ensure that the Public Accounts Committee provides complete documentation of the proceedings, which encompasses minutes, submissions, and evidence presented to facilitate transparency and allow for independent review by the Nigerian public.
This investigation by the Public Accounts Committee addresses claims that around ₦200 trillion is unaccounted for in NNPCL’s financial records from 2017 to 2023.
Concerns have been raised by the Committee regarding unresolved discrepancies and insufficient documentation, as numerous officials have neglected to attend hearings or give satisfactory explanations.
