The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep regret over the tragic accident on the Keffi-Abuja Highway that resulted in seven fatalities.
In a statement released on Thursday by FRSC spokesman Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mr. Mohammed extended condolences to the families affected and prayed for the souls of the deceased.
He referred to the incident as "painful and devastating", emphasizing that every loss of life on the country's roads is unacceptable.
Initial reports indicate that a single vehicle, allegedly traveling at excessive speed, lost control and collided with oncoming traffic.
Mr. Mohammed stated that FRSC rescue teams were dispatched immediately after alerts were received about the accident.
“Upon their arrival, the personnel faced significant unrest among certain members of the public,” he added.
The situation escalated to a series of attacks against the Keffi Unit Command from some commercial motorcyclists who were present at the scene.
“The Corps recognizes the intensity of emotion that often follows road accidents resulting in fatalities,” he said.
While preliminary findings point towards speeding and loss of vehicle control, Mr. Mohammed has mandated a thorough and transparent investigation that will also address any possible factors related to regular patrols.
“We will refrain from hasty judgments or brushing aside public concerns,” he assured.
“Any staff member found to have acted outside of approved operational protocols will be accountable under the law,” he continued.
Mr. Mohammed praised the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army for their rapid response, which helped restore order and prevented further chaos.
He acknowledged their professionalism and timely actions that ensured the safety of lives and property in the aftermath.
“The Corps is devoted to maintaining professionalism, exercising restraint, and consistently engaging with the communities in a bid to foster mutual trust.”
The Corps has called for calm and requested the public to allow due processes to unfold, warning that violence against rescue and enforcement teams undermines efforts to ensure public safety.
As investigations continue, Mr. Mohammed reiterated the commitment of the FRSC to uphold road safety, equity, and transparency.
