Shehu Sani, a former Senator for Kaduna Central, has expressed strong disapproval of the noticeable lack of engagement from opposition lawmakers within Nigeria's National Assembly. In a recent post on his X handle, Sani highlighted their perceived passivity concerning significant national matters, including borrowing, security challenges, and leadership within the electoral commission.
Sani observed that many Nigerians who vocalise concerns about governance online do not extend the same pressure to their elected officials. He questioned why citizens continue to defend their representatives in online discussions, especially when these lawmakers remain silent on crucial national debates.
He specifically pointed out that opposition senators have not taken firm stances on major national issues. These include the proposed $6 billion loan, the worsening insecurity across the country, and the calls for greater accountability within the electoral framework.
"Your opposition Senator lacks the courage to stand in the chamber and oppose the $6 billion loan," Sani stated. "Your opposition Senator lacks the courage to stand in the Chamber and speak on insecurity.
"Your opposition Senator lacks the courage to stand in the Chambers and demand the resignation of the INEC chairman. And you are not confronting your Senator; instead, you are in his comment section praising him and diverting your anger towards others. When will you stop deceiving yourselves, or when will you break free from deception?"
