Vice President Kashim Shettima has confirmed that a battalion of the Nigerian Army has been dispatched to the forests in Kwara State following a brutal attack that occurred last week in Woro, within the Kaiama Local Government Area.
The tragic event resulted in the deaths of more than 100 individuals, with many still unaccounted for in the days that followed.
During his condolence visit to Ilorin on Saturday, Shettima, who was leading a Federal Government delegation, stated that the security operation was designed to eliminate threats and to restore order within the affected areas.
He described the massacre as an egregious infringement on citizens' rights to live peacefully and practice their faith, emphasizing that the extent of the violence had sent shockwaves through the nation.
Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at the Ahmadu Bello House in Ilorin, where he reiterated the commitment to restoring stability in Kaiama and surrounding regions.
Shettima assured locals that the Federal Government, in collaboration with state officials, would persist in offering both security and humanitarian aid.
He also conveyed condolences from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the people of Kaiama and the wider Kwara State, praying for the souls of the deceased and urging strength for their families.
The Vice President instructed the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to mobilize essential resources to support the affected communities.
Accompanying Shettima were notable figures including Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Senators Ali Ndume, Emmanuel Udende, Ovie Omo-Agege, NEMA's DG, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, and the Managing Director of Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Engr. Jennifer Adighije.
In response to the Federal Government's swift actions, Governor AbdulRazaq commended the immediate deployment of military personnel as well as police tactical teams to the impacted areas. He confirmed that troops involved in Operation Savannah Shield were actively engaged in efforts to avert further violence.
Local leaders, including the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Sheu Omar, and the Chairman of the Local Government, Abdullahi Abubakar Danladi, expressed gratitude for the federal intervention and recognized Shettima’s visit, reiterating calls for enduring security within the region.
On behalf of Northeastern states, Governor Zulum extended sympathies to the people of Kwara, praying for the victims and affirming that Muslims trust in divine fate, hopeful that such bloodshed will not be repeated.
