A heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday night along the Lokoja–Obajana Road in Kogi State where six people were confirmed dead and nine others were injured in a severe auto crash.
The collision involved a Toyota Hiace bus and an articulated vehicle in the Apata area of the highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident transpired when the Toyota Hiace bus, which bore the registration number XW 142 ENU, collided head-on with a trailer that had the registration number KAB 575 XA, traveling in the opposite direction.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Tenimu Yusuf Etuku, confirmed the crash on Saturday, labeling it as fatal and attributing its cause to excessive speed.
Etuku reported that a total of 17 individuals, comprising 14 males and three females, were involved in the incident. He noted that among the victims, nine individuals (eight males and one female) sustained injuries, while six people (five males and one female) lost their lives. Two other passengers escaped unharmed.
The details indicated that the crash happened when the bus veered into the trailer at a high velocity.
The injured victims were promptly taken to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for immediate medical assistance, and the deceased bodies were transported to Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
Additionally, items retrieved from the crash site included ₦20,800 in cash, two bags, two Airtel mobile phones, along with several sacks and other bags, all of which have been handed over to the Obajana Police Station along with the accident vehicles.
To prevent future fatalities and damages, Etuku advised motorists to refrain from speeding on highways.
