Senator Ibrahim Lamido, who serves the Sokoto East Senatorial District, has officially announced his plan to contest in the upcoming 2027 governorship election for Sokoto State with the All Progressives Congress (APC). He has dismissed recent claims that he is not affiliated with the party as unfounded and without merit.
In an interview conducted on Tuesday with our correspondent, the senator described the rumors regarding his party affiliation as baseless.
"I am firmly in the APC, as everyone is aware, and I have recently renewed my membership online. Anyone alleging that I am no longer with the APC is simply not being truthful,” he stated.
Lamido elaborated on his motivation for entering the race, attributing it to the pressing security issues within Sokoto State, especially concerning banditry and the displacement of rural communities. He emphasized the necessity for strong leadership and better cooperation with federal security agencies and local populations to address these challenges.
"Sokoto State has faced significant security dilemmas. Our rural populations require security to return to agriculture and their livelihood sources. We must prioritize security to accomplish genuine development," he added.
Moreover, he expressed that his aspirations go beyond security, focusing on the economic revitalization of the state through increased agricultural investments, youth empowerment, and improved infrastructure. He reinforced that his ambitions are not driven by personal gain but by a commitment to service.
Political analysts suggest that Lamido's statements could alter the dynamics within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, as discussions among party stakeholders intensify.
