Troops operating under the banner of Operation Whirl Stroke managed to prevent a kidnapping incident on the Enugu-Otukpo Road, successfully rescuing three victims in the process.
Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, revealed this information in a statement released on February 26, 2026. He indicated that a mobile phone, suspected to belong to the kidnappers, was found at the scene.
According to the statement, "Troops from Sector 1 of Operation Whirl Stroke have effectively foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu-Otukpo Road, rescuing three victims without sustaining any casualties."
This event took place on February 25, 2026. While on a night operation at the Forward Operation Base (FOB) in Otukpo, troops acting on credible information learned that an 18-seater Benue Links bus with the registration number TYK 221 YK had been taken by suspected kidnappers.
At the time of the abduction, the vehicle was transporting four passengers along with a minor.
Upon receiving the intelligence, the troops quickly mobilized to the targeted area and pursued the kidnappers as they attempted to escape.
The swift action of the forces compelled the abductors to abandon three of their captives. There was no direct confrontation during the chase.
“Nonetheless, a mobile phone thought to be linked to the kidnappers was retrieved from the location,” the statement continued.
The Force Commander praised the troops for their determination, watchfulness, and effectiveness in averting a potentially significant security threat.
He also advised road users to maintain a constant state of alertness.
Motorists are encouraged to be careful and mindful of any unusual lack of vehicular activity over a distance of up to two kilometers and to stop and evaluate the situation when needed.
Drivers were further urged to immediately report any suspicious behavior to the nearest security checkpoint to ensure prompt action can be taken.
