Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, made an unannounced visit to the Jerome Udorji Secretariat in Awka on Wednesday, leading to the closure of the gates against late-arriving employees.
Arriving at approximately 10am, the governor instructed the gates to be locked to prevent latecomers from accessing the complex, which accommodates various state ministries.
During his visit, Soludo evaluated several ministries and departments, keeping track of employee attendance and observing their punctuality, behavior, and overall dedication to their responsibilities.
He indicated that this initiative was part of his efforts to assess the working culture within the state’s civil service and to advocate for necessary reforms.
Post-inspection, the governor voiced his concerns regarding the attendance levels.
“I made an unscheduled visit to the State Civil Service secretariat this morning. I am disappointed to find that some staff had not reported for work by 10am.
“However, I commend the diligent civil servants I encountered at their stations. Your commitment serves as the foundation of our service. Continue the good work,” he remarked.
Soludo cautioned employees who do not meet performance standards to make way for those who are more dedicated.
After the inspection, he reiterated that his government would not tolerate any inefficiencies.
He warned that civil servants who resist adapting to the government’s reform vision could face repercussions, including dismissal from their positions.
“Those who cannot align with the new direction for the civil service will be let go. The government is focused on fostering discipline and enhancing service delivery,” he declared.
