A 35-year-old attorney, Chinette Gallichan, lost her life in a shooting that occurred outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) located at the intersection of Fox and Joubert streets in Johannesburg's Central Business District.
This tragic event took place around 9:00 AM on Monday, March 23, 2026, just as Gallichan arrived for an engagement at the CCMA.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that she had just stepped out of her car when an attacker approached her and fired shots at very close range.
The gunman quickly fled on foot, later getting into a waiting vehicle to escape the scene.
Friends and colleagues have expressed their shock and sorrow following her untimely demise.
Jacobus Myburgh, a fellow lawyer, mentioned that Gallichan had been specializing in labor litigation at Sibanye-Stillwater at the time of her death.
She was reportedly involved in a labor dispute regarding workers who were allegedly retrenched and were seeking compensation.
Initial reports from the crime scene suggest that this may have been a targeted attack, as nothing was taken from her.
Gallichan earned her LLB from the University of South Africa (Unisa) and later achieved a postgraduate diploma in labor law with distinction from the University of Johannesburg.
In a social media post, Myburgh noted that Gallichan was a well-known figure within both legal and sporting communities, particularly at the CCMA, where she consistently worked on cases related to unpaid salaries and unfair terminations.
Law enforcement officials have initiated a murder investigation, and inquiries are currently ongoing.
