Spain has commenced a formal investigation into leading social media companies concerning allegations of their distribution of artificial intelligence- generated child sexual abuse materials. This action signifies an intensified effort by the Spanish government to combat online threats and ensure child safety.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that prosecutors have been instructed to examine the activities of X, Meta, and TikTok related to the dissemination of such illegal content.
Sánchez expressed his condemnation of the platforms' apparent failure to adequately protect young users through a post on his official X account.
"These platforms are undermining the mental health, dignity, and rights of our children," he stated. "The state cannot allow this. The impunity of these giants must end."
This intervention represents one of the most decisive actions taken by the Spanish government against global technology firms accused of insufficiently managing the harmful content that is exacerbated by modern artificial intelligence tools.
Earlier this month, Sánchez introduced a range of measures focused on addressing online abuse and fortifying child protection policies. One key proposal includes restricting social media access to children below the age of 16, a step the government argues is essential to minimize their exposure to harmful and exploitative materials.
The investigation aims to assess whether these platforms have breached Spanish laws aimed at safeguarding minors and preventing the distribution of illicit content, particularly material produced using artificial intelligence technologies.
Madrid's initiative adds to the increasing pressure throughout Europe for tech companies to enhance their oversight of online content, especially as advanced AI tools facilitate the rapid creation and distribution of harmful materials at scale.
