Spain is set to resume diplomatic operations at its embassy in Tehran, with its ambassador instructed to return to the Iranian capital. Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares confirmed on Thursday, April 9, that the mission would reopen with immediate effect.

The decision to reinstate the embassy comes just one day after a 14-day ceasefire agreement was reached between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Albares stated that Ambassador Antonio Sanchez-Benedito has been tasked with returning to Tehran to restart embassy activities, which were put on hold on March 7 following airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel.

"We aim to support peace initiatives from every possible avenue, including through our presence in Tehran," Albares commented. He further criticised Israel's ongoing military actions in Lebanon, describing them as "a disgrace" and a potential threat to the fragile ceasefire.

Previously, Spain had evacuated its ambassador from Iran at the beginning of March as hostilities escalated in the region.
