A 42-year-old man from Guatemala has entered a guilty plea in federal court on Wednesday, April 8, for a serious offense linked to a prominent human smuggling operation. Daniel Zavala Ramos acknowledged his role in a 2021 plot aimed at transporting undocumented migrants from Guatemala through Mexico towards the United States. This operation tragically concluded with a devastating accident that led to the deaths of more than 50 individuals.

Ramos was extradited from Guatemala in 2025 and is now confronting the possibility of a life prison sentence.

The charges arise from an incident on December 9, 2021, where an overloaded tractor-trailer collided with a pedestrian bridge support and overturned near the state capital of Chiapas, located in southern Mexico. Officials reported dire circumstances, stating that at least 160 migrants were confined within the freight container at the time.

The collision resulted in the fatalities of at least 53 people, including children traveling alone, and left over 100 others injured. The location of this disaster was about 160 miles from the Guatemalan border and approximately 1,400 miles south of the Texas border.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the criminal network employed various perilous transport methods, such as cattle trucks, minivans, and tractor-trailers. Prosecutors disclosed that the conspirators used Facebook Messenger to arrange identification documents and provided unaccompanied minors with pre-arranged responses to use if they encountered authorities.

Ramos is the first of six Guatemalans charged in connection with the fatal crash to be convicted. While his sentencing is slated for July 7, legal proceedings for the remaining five defendants are ongoing, with a final pretrial conference scheduled for June 3. Ramos specifically admitted guilt to a single charge of conspiracy to transport migrants to the U.S. in a manner that endangered lives and caused death and serious injuries.

The individuals who survived the 2021 crash, many of whom hailed from Guatemala, remain the focus of continuous international efforts to dismantle the organizations that exploit these high-risk journeys for profit.
